8 Cargobull News · No. 52 Promising partnership: South African trailer manufacturer GRW and Schmitz Cargobull work together to develop trailers. The goal of the two partners is to offer the best trailer on the market. Driven by Quality GRW, based in Worcester, South Africa, is a leading designer and manufacturer of transport equipment and innovative tankers and trailers, as well as a provider of various types of services. GRW was founded in 1996 by Gerhard van der Merwe, Wentzel van der Merwe and Rossouw van Eeden. Originally, the company manufactured only tankers. However, a more varied portfolio for different markets and applications has been developed over the last six years. To remain competitive it was necessary to become more flexible: expanding the design and manufacture of reefer semi-trailers and rigid truck box bodies, as well as flatbed trailers and, more recently, curtainsider trailers. “Our philosophy is to offer the best in class,” asserts CEO, Gerhard van der Merwe. “That’s why we approached Schmitz Cargobull, because in our eyes they produce the best reefer products in the world: a perfect partnership.” GRW caters to customers from the most diverse industries, ranging from oil, chemicals, construction and mining to the fast-moving consumer goods, temperature-controlled perishable goods, palletised goods and general cargo areas. “The majority of our vehicles are equipped according to customer requirements,” says van der Merwe. “We sell our products on the basis of total cost of ownership, so our focus is on customer service as well as on the innovative character and quality of our products.” GRW has approximately 800 employees, 640 of them are based in the headquarters and an ultra-modern manufacturing complex in Worcester. A further 160 employees make up the workforces of the company’s own service centres in South Africa’s economic hubs of Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. Numerous partners, some of whom are located in more remote areas, provide comprehensive services and ensure a broad, 24-hour after-sales support network to customers. In 2016 GRW produced and sold a total of 1,220 trailers. Forty-five refrigerated trailers have been manufactured since November 2016. There are currently another 80 units in the order books. These are positive signs to a slow recovery of the South African economy, which augurs well for a lasting and mutually beneficial business relationship between GRW and Schmitz Cargobull. as New refrigeration unit in focus Workshops: Schmitz Cargobull Parts & Services develops new service goals and procedures for transport refrigeration units. What more can be done for customers, what needs to be improved, where can processes be accelerated through the use of new technologies, what challenges must be addressed by the workshops and customers, how can Europe-wide service be made even more efficient? Finding answers to these questions was the topic of the two-day after-sales meeting at the Schmitz Cargobull plant in Altenberge, where representatives from 35 European countries exchanged experiences and ideas. Supported by specialist presentations from the service areas, standard service targets and procedures were defined at conferences Europe-wide, but new ideas for the future were developed as well. The pro-active service for the transport refrigeration unit was a key topic, in as much as a comprehensive network, spare parts availability and the around-the-clock availability of technical support all protect the transported goods and ensure punctual delivery. A positive customer response to three-stage remote monitoring was reported from all countries, in as much as service partners, drivers or fleet managers promptly receive information for maintenance or repair. All experts are very satisfied with the constantly upgraded training courses, which are conducted on site in the respective national languages. The training program for workshops contains courses on a variety of subjects, from refrigeration machine repair through to the Schmitz Cargobull repair system. ke After-sales experts from 35 countries came together for the workshop on the topic of transport refrigeration units.
