German Corporate Health Award 2017 for Schmitz Cargobull


Horstmar, June 2017 – The BKK Dachverband (an umbrella organisation of company health insurance funds) has granted eleven companies the German Corporate Health Award 2017 in various categories for their engagement in the field of health. In the Industry category the award went to Schmitz Cargobull, the European market leader for semi-trailers. Schmitz Cargobull - with a 5,600-strong workforce - has implemented a high-quality corporate health management programme at various company locations. The issue of health is set down in writing as a management guideline in the corporate policy and is an integral part of the company's philosophy.

The aim of the measures is to increase employee satisfaction, promote loyalty to the company and maintain the performance level and employability of employees up to a late retirement age, so as to cope with the challenges of demographic change. The test and training trailer, entitled "GeKo – Gesundheit kommt an (health comes to you)!", has received an enthusiastic welcome from the workforce. The idea is that if the employee does not do any fitness training, the fitness centre comes to the employee on site. Following this approach, a semi-trailer was converted into a travelling training studio. The training times are synchronised with the shift schedules of the employees. Participants can track their physical fitness with a simple traffic-light system and, working from this, create their personal programme. A therapist from the health centre gives advice and accompanies the custom-made units, particularly focusing on cardiovascular and back training, so that very good results can be achieved with only 30 minutes of training a week. At some of the surrounding Schmitz Cargobull AG locations, the company partners with health centres and fitness studios, agreeing on special rates for the workforce. Furthermore, the company provides employees with an allowance for participating in the corporate health management programme.

Another important benefit is the recording of an individual’s state of psychological and physical health and the provision of quick help with the assurance of a medical appointment within 10 days in a situation of acute psychological stress. Health management also includes, among other things, topics such as manager coaching in "healthy leadership", improving general health, and the ergonomic design of work processes. The aim of all project measures is a holistic operational social and health management with comprehensive measures for maintaining employee health.

Michael Timmermann, the manager of the Vreden plant, comments: "The health of our employees is very important to us. Occupational Health and Safety, the works council and the project group are therefore strongly committed to this goal. Work safety and workplaces, at which health-conscious employees can stay healthy even under conditions that are sometimes challenging, are the number one priority for us". There is also healthy fun in the numerous company sports groups and health management offerings.
