Double victory: SmartTrailer and Transformers Trailer impress with sustainable concepts

December 2017 – Schmitz Cargobull has secured not one but two awards in the European Transport Prize for Sustainability. The SmartTrailer plus Trailer Telematics System TrailerConnect and the Transformers Trailer with Recuperation impressed the jury in the Telematics systems and Bodies/trailers categories. “We are delighted to have won in not one but two of the most important categories,” said Andreas Schmitz at the awards ceremony in Munich. He praised the “sustainable commitment” of all employees.

In the Telematics category, the Smart Trailer impressed as a comprehensive concept consisting of hardware (control unit/sensors) and built-in services (hosting, visualisation via an online portal or data transmission over an interface). In practical use, the intelligent transport solutions reveals its true added value in box body vehicles with a refrigeration unit. “Our hardware and TrailerConnect are designed as barrier-free solutions that can be used across all manufacturers,” explains Andreas Schmitz, CEO of Schmitz Cargobull AG. TrailerConnect works as an autonomous system for the trailer and has its own power source. A range of sensors deliver measured values that can then be controlled wirelessly over the Internet or on a smartphone app. “The Smart Trailer is not a telematics application, it is a comprehensive universal concept,” explained the jury when the prize for the telematics category was presented.

In the Transformer project, which is made up of 13 partners from the commercial vehicle industry and funded by the European Commission, experts are working on an energy-efficient trailer to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 15%. “For the base, we are using a classic curtainsider equipped with an electric powertrain and recuperation,” announced Roland Klement, Board Member Research & Development at Schmitz Cargobull AG. The project is also adding aerodynamic measures, such as a fully height-adjustable roof. “However, the vehicle is not a limited edition, it is a standard trailer that can pass through the standard production process and meet all the requirements for road approval,” explains Klement. The practicality of the Transformer Trailer was a decisive factor in its win in the trailer/body category and also received praise from the jury.

The European Transport Prize for Sustainability is awarded by the HUSS publishing company and has been around for four years. This year, 36 companies battled it out in 16 categories with 47 innovative products and services. After the editorial team selected the finalists, the jury then named the overall winners.
