Our path to net zero

Climate protection is a key area of action in our sustainability strategy. Among other things, Schmitz Cargobull is committed to reduce Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 90 % by 2029/30 and achieve net-zero emissions along the entire value chain by 2044/45. Our climate targets are scientifically based and validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

By strategically deploying renewable energies, low-emission materials, and innovative transport solutions, we are driving the transition to climate protection. In the upstream value chain, our focus is on emission-intensive precursors made from metals and petroleum derivatives, as well as optimizing our transport logistics. In the downstream value chain, we concentrate particularly on reducing emissions along the cold chain. Within our own operations, we achieve our climate protection goals through photovoltaic systems, heat generation from renewable energies, energy-efficient technologies, certified green electricity, and an electrified vehicle fleet.

  • What is the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)?
    The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) provides companies with a scientifically sound framework for reducing their greenhouse gas emissions in line with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. It also helps minimise risks arising from climate change and future CO₂ pricing. More than 11,000 companies worldwide (as of 2025) are already working with the SBTi.
  • What distinguishes SBTs from other goals and initiatives?

    Science Based Targets (SBTs) differ from other climate goals and sustainability initiatives in the following ways:

    1. Scientific basis: SBTs are based on the latest climate science and are designed to limit global warming in line with the Paris Agreement.
    2. Externally validated: Targets are reviewed and officially recognised by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), which increases credibility and transparency.
    3. Clear reduction path: SBTs define concrete, measurable emission reduction targets across Scope 1, 2, and increasingly Scope 3 – in contrast to general sustainability promises.
  • What does joining the initiative mean?

    Above all, participation in the SBTi enables us to conduct independent and fact-based target assessments, increases transparency and target quality, and underscores Schmitz Cargobull's pioneering role in the trailer industry.

Terms relating to climate change regularly appear in the news. For this reason, we at Schmitz Cargobull attach great importance to using precise terminology in order to avoid misunderstandings and create transparency. Terms such as “climate neutrality” and “net-zero” have different meanings, especially in the context of the SBTi standards. Clear language ensures that our goals are communicated in a comprehensible manner and in line with international requirements.

Short term SBTi climate targets:

Schmitz Cargobull commits to reduce absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions by 90% by financial year 2029/30 compared to the base year 2021.* Schmitz Cargobull also commits to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 35% by financial year 2034/35 compared to the base year 2021/22.*

Long term SBTi climate targets:

Schmitz Cargobull commits to maintain a reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions of at least 90% from financial year 2029/30 to financial year 2044/45 compared to the base year 2021/22.* Schmitz Cargobull also commits to reduce absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by 90% by financial year 2044/45 compared to the base year 2021/22.*

* The target includes land-based emissions and extractions from bioenergy raw materials.
