The steering axle system allows the operator to make more efficient use of his trailer through improved maneuverability, making inner city deliveries easier and providing the ability to negotiate small roundabouts on urban roads.
Facts about the steering axle
• While making a turn, the movement between the truck and trailer is transmitted by the fifth wheel plate, locked into the fifth wheel coupling by the steering wedge. The steering bar transmits this steering motion directly and without any play to the axle mounting frame.
• Driving in a roundabout, internal radius is saved. Decreased internal turning radius can prevent tire sidewall damage which is caused by sharp curbs.
• Steered axle compared to rigid axle can reduces effective tractive forces. This force directly affects chassis wear, fuel bills, tire wear and even the road wear.
Savings potential through the steering axle
TimeThe good manoeuvrability saves you time during trips and when loading and unloading.Les mer
FuelLower tractive forces on turns decrease tires resistance and therefore fuel is saved.Les mer
Tire wearLess heat built up on tires while turning (tires are rolling instead of scuffing) provide extended tire life and longer tire replacement interval.Les mer
Maintenance costsDamage prevention to tires on narrow roads and roundabouts – less incidents of tire damage. Reduced chassis wear due lower tractive forces on axles.Les mer
