Electronic Brake Performance Monitoring System (EBPMS)
Monitor the brakes in the trailer permanently and proactively. With the EBPMS software - recognised by the DVSA - the brake performance of the truck and trailer is constantly monitored and analysed. As a feature in TrailerConnect®, the telematics from Schmitz Cargobull, you receive regular reports and are warned of critical conditions in good time.
Increase the trailer uptime - according to regulations
Reports
- Brake performance reports can be generated on demand with 24/7 availability through the portal, or they can be scheduled for automatic creation and distribution.
- Reports include a forecast for future Performance so that maintenance and servicing can be planned for the long term.
- Automatic EBPMS reports not only on individual vehicles, but also für entire fleets (available from June).
- Collected data is archived for 36 months within the minimum term of the contract as a standard, extension is possible.
Integration with TrailerConnect®
- EBPMS is integrated into the TrailerConnect® telematics system and requires no additional hardware, only a separate tarif option.
- Additional to the EBPMS functions, the customer gets a variety of different functions to optimize the uptime of his fleet trough the Cargobull Telematics TrailerConnect® portal.
Alarms
- The system provides timely warnings of critical conditions to avoid risks.
- Alarms can be individualized (e.g. alarms only over a certain period of time or only on certain days of the week, alert via pop-up in the portal, via e-mail or via SMS)

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
-
What is EBPMS?
- EBPMS monitors and reports on the braking performance of a trailer during normal operation.
- It gathers data from the trailer's EBS during braking events and provides a braking performance value (BPV).
- This BPV can be used to assess braking efficiency and identify potential issues.
- The system helps operators understand and improve braking performance, and can be a key part of managing their fleet's safety.
-
How does EBPMS work?
- EBPMS collects data from the trailer's Electronic Braking System (EBS) during braking events.
- This data includes things like vehicle speed, demand pressure, axle load, and road gradient.
- The system analyses this data to calculate a Braking Performance Value (BPV).
- The BPV is a measure of the braking system's efficiency under specific conditions.
- EBPMS typically uses a telematics unit to transmit data to a cloud-based system for analysis and reporting.
-
What are the benefits of using EBPMS?
- Alternative to Roller Brake Tests: EBPMS can be used as an alternative to some roller brake tests, reducing the frequency of these tests.
- Improved Safety: Continuous monitoring can help identify potential braking issues early on, leading to improved safety.
- Reduced Downtime: Early identification of issues can prevent major brake failures and reduce downtime.
- Lower Operating Costs: Well-maintained brakes improve fuel efficiency and reduce wear on other components, lowering operating costs.
- Better Compliance: EBPMS can help operators maintain compliance with braking regulations and avoid potential penalties.
-
What are some limitations of EBPMS?
- EBPMS does not assess parking brake performance.
- While it can reduce the need for roller brake tests, it doesn't completely eliminate them.
- The DVSA still requires at least one laden roller brake test during the annual MOT inspection.
-
How do I access EBPMS data?Schmitz is currently updating their telematics system with compatible brake systems to be able to run EBPMS reports via Trailer Connect telematics.
-
Is EBPMS available on all Schmitz trailers?
Since 2019 Schmitz has been installing telematics hardware to the trailers. For customer already with active telematics on the trailer the report is available to run – however, there is a specific activation process and documents to be completed. Please contact Christine Cullen (Christine.cullen@cargobull ) and confirm the chassis number to be checked and activated.
For customer with inactive telematics should contact Christine Cullen to activate (Christine.cullen@cargobull.com)

I also have other manufacturers trailers in my fleet – can I have EBPMS on these too?For customers with a mix fleet, it is possible to buy Schmitz telematics hardware for a retrofit solution on other trailers. Along with the suitable tariff, EBPMS is also possible to non Schmitz trailers. Please contact Christine Cullen for further details.
-
Who can use EBPMS?
- EBPMS can be fitted to most trailers with an Electronic Braking System (EBS), especially those manufactured after 2008.
- It's beneficial for fleets of all sizes.
